Afrofuturism

a photo series that envisions futures of black liberation that convey an expansive image of the black experience. Intended to immerse viewers in a conversation and experience that reimagines, reinterprets and reclaims the past and present for a more empowering and liberated future for Black Americans.

[Cultural critic and writer] Mark Dery coined “Afrofuturism” the term and it was conceived through his discussions with author Samuel Delany, critic Greg Tate and historian Tricia Rose and featured in his essay “Black to the Future(link is external).”

By imagining an afrofuture, we are allowing ourselves to become a part of something larger than our selves. Through my lens, I invite you to dream of a future that will make these old systems of control and oppressive paradigms obsolete. So that black people in America will know and feel that they have other choices outside of what we have been conditioned to believe. What will your part be in creating an afrofuture? How will you reimagine, reinterpret and reclaim the past and present for a more empowering and liberated future for Black Americans? I invite you to allow your ancestors and future descendants to dream you into being.
